The Sunshine Canyon Hill Climb last Saturday was won by team rider Michael Dessau (in a time of 31:46) and Team 5280 swept the Junior Men 13-14 category. Dean Haas took second 13 seconds back, and Zane Godby took third in only his second race of the season less than 3 minutes behind. Joe Haulmann came in for 7th.
The hill climb is 5.8 miles for the junior categories, with almost all of it up the steep Boulder climb. The senior categories continue on over the dirt road to the mountain town of Gold Hill. This year, Dean, Michael, and Zane all attacked the field at the very bottom of the climb (inside ΒΌ of a mile from the start) and rode as a group most of the way up the canyon. After Zane dropped off, Michael jumped away from Dean to score his fifth win of the season, and get revenge for losing the sprint to Dean at the Primus Mootry crit two weeks before (where Team 5280 also swept 1-2-3).
In the other categories, Team 5280 scored a win in the Junior Men 15-18 field from Yannick Eckmann (with a time of 29:44). Andrew Barker raced to a 12th place finish in the Pro-1-2 field (time of 47:07 up the full climb) and VMG/Felt rider Danny Hiller rolled a time of 55:08 to come in 15th for category 3 senior field.
