Slipstream/Chipotle H30 worked hard at the front today (above: Zabriskie, Danielson, Vande Velde, Lowe) as they chased down the day’s main breakaway on the way to the decisive Brasstown Bald finish. They managed to position race leader Trent Lowe for the grand finale. Tenacious Trent hung close to challenger Levi Leipheimer on the slopes of the unrelenting and crowded ascent.
When the lesser known, but equally dangerous rival Kanstantin Sivtsov took off, neither of the favorites reacted. Unbeknownst to almost everyone covering the event, the Belarussian rider was only 6″ off of Trent in GC. His finish on Brasstown put him in the yellow race leader’s jersey.
Lowe did hang on to the Best Young Rider jersey and increased his lead on second place Christian Meier to 3′40″. Tyler Farrar remains second in the sprint classification and will look to move up tomorrow during the final circuit race through downtown Atlanta.

Awesome ride Trent! First you surprised at Paris-Nice and now this. I can’t help but wonder why your talent was recognized with Discovery?
Hope to watch you all through July! Can anyone say best young rider!”
Nice job Trent, staying up there with Levi. Anybody else notice that Svein Tuft was wearing Slipstream gloves, or was I seeing things?
JV, how could you guys not know that Siutsou was only 6 seconds down? I was screaming at my computer for Trent to go after him and stop watching Levi run out of gas. It looked like Trent could have won the stage if he would have just attacked in the last few hundred meters instead of focusing on Levi. Maybe he was cooked too. Oh well, great result anyway. Maybe there are time bonuses available tomorrow.
What happened to Danny?
Tough one to swallow, boys, no two ways about it. Live and learn I guess. When the dust clears, still a great result, and great work by the team to stay in the hunt.
JV,
Got your twitter; man, it’s just the bad breaks today. I’m sure you, the team, and Trent did all you could! They always say football’s a game of inches, but I think seconds in cycling are more heartbreaking.
I know it’s been a rough week with Timmy’s crash and all; your essay the other day made it clear to me your commitment to this sport and the team. Keep it up, all of you!
I didnt catch the riders number but whoever the rider was who gave the little boy his sweaty gloves on the way down brasstown is a class act. That kid will never forget that stuff. Way to go guys you should all be proud of yourselves i screamed my guts out up on that mountain today.
Good eyes, Greg! There’s a photo over at CyclingNews, he was indeed.
Greg (above) - I swore I saw the gloves too! Thank god I’m not the only one who did.
Trent and company! Great rides today! So many of us can play the woulda, shoulda, coulda game not being the ones hauling a$$ up the hill! You were awesome and impressive as all heck today so hold your heads high and keep the argyle kick a$$ a comin’!!! Good luck to Tyler tomorrow in the points attack!
I really thought I had seen this…

I was bummed to read about Trent losing the yellow jersey. Still, you have to hand it to him - “the smurf” is riding super strong.
Interestingly, I was watching the finish on Cycling TV and I remember one of the commentators saying how Trent shouldn’t bother about Sivtsov because he was that much further back on GC. Well… Was he really?
