Amstel Gold: The day dawned sunny after a night of unpromising rain. A nice change for this part of Europe.
Of course after Martijn’s fantastic cobble race and with Maastricht being his home town, it was an agreeable idea to do everything we could for him today. He was well placed in the front with 20 km to go along with Ryder, Pat and David. But today’s legs just weren’t the same as last week.
The pace on the climbs (sample view above) was brutal and yours truly was feeling some extra jet lag. Even with the huge, motivated crowd of Dutch and Belgies, I had some trouble staying in the race.
Amstel Gold is a beautiful race, and even though the day was difficult, we got through it. We’re all looking forward to the mid-week Flèche Wallonne!
Till next time…Jason
