24 hours have passed now since the Tour of Flanders and I’m really happy (and significantly relieved) that no one was seriously hurt. Mike Friedman crashed at a really bad time, banging himself up a bit. Though he wrecked his chances of a good showing more than his rugged Meatball body.
Despite the epic weather conditions, all eight cyclists had safe rides. And DS Johnny Weltz pulled off more than a few amazing rally car maneuvers on thoroughly treacherous roads. He managed to make me (and mechanic Kevin Grove too, I think) a bit nervous at times, but did not kill us (which we greatly appreciate).
A friend asked yesterday after the race if I get nervous about our guys under conditions like Flanders. She was right on target with her question because, in fact, I do worry about our guys. I don’t like to ever see any of them get hurt. Having to watch them race in weather like yesterday’s definitely puts more grey hairs in my beard and fewer hairs on the top of my head!
So from my perspective, the team had a very successful showing in our first Flanders. Our young newcomer Martijn did especially well, but also Maggie and Tyler. We can definitely be proud of the showing they put in.
Now on to Paris-Roubaix.
