So I’m just getting going on a night shift in Emergency at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, CA (my day job as it were). My cell rings and the caller ID shows a country code 34 number: Spain. Probably Girona and something from a rider.
In fact it’s assistant DS Matt White concerned about our young Aussie sprinter Chris “CJ” Sutton who was stung on the face by a bee about 24 hours ago. They’d correctly done ice and antihistamine, but were worried by the amount of swelling that had occurred overnight (see photo).
I reassured Matt and CJ that this is quite common and should resolve itself with continued treatment and a bit of time. The swelling tends to decrease too during the day when the patient is upright and gravity is working in his favor.
So I’ll be staying in touch with them to make certain all goes as expected. But CJ should be 100% for de Panne and the upcoming Classics.
