Bicycling’s Joe Lindsey spends some time with David Zabriskie during the 2008 Tour of California to get inside one of the sport’s most misunderstood personalities.
Lindsey writes: “Zabriskie is, as the Belgians would say, puffing out their cheeks as if to say, ‘What can you say? Guy’s a good damn bike racer. Time triallist, anyway.’ So a guy like that can rock the ’stache whether it’s a joke or not.”

Thanks, Dave Z! You are only getting better and make cycling more interesting.
Please keep it up!

Dude, your stache really freaked me out. I started to approach you at the TOC to take a picture of you with my kid but when I saw the mustache in person I froze in my tracks, I am not sure why, that thing has some kind of crazy mesmerizing power that threw me into some kind of weird trance.
I was wondering if you or Steve Cozza were the newest member of the Village People, the cyclist one…. now those guys knew how to rock a stache!
Keep it real my freaky brother!
DZ … I love the stache. I did think perhaps you’d have ’shaved’ a few seconds off your TT time at the TOC prologue if you were clean shaven. Who cares about a few mila-seconds? You only get to stand on the podium for a few seconds anyway. You can look like a Guinness man 24 hours a day. I would encourage you grease it back for better aero in July. I want to see an 05 repeat (stage win not crash). I’ll be watching.

Dave,
Can’t beat a bit of facial bumfluff when you’re racing. Its handy for storing a bits of food and snot which maybe a useful source of energy when you hit the mountains!
Good luck for the season!
I too was frozen in my tracks when I saw the mustache. I didn’t know whether to ridicule it or to run away screaming.
I thought that the DZ in that TOC prologue was “pretty goooood…but man, those guys in ahead of him were supa supa gooooood”. You’re hilarious man and ballsy to rock a huge stache like that. Keep up the comedy and the great cycling. Oh and congrats to you and your wife on the upcoming little DZ. Peace.
