May 25, 2007 - Spain - In his first ProTour race ever, Tom Peterson is fighting for a place at the top of the GC in La Volta Catalunya. Peterson - only 20 years old and the youngest rider competing in “La Volta” - fought his way past top Tour de France riders such as Alexandre Vinokourov and Cyril Dessel to finish his first ever high mountain stage in 21st place, only 3 minutes down.
“I think this shows that Tom can one day truly be a top Tour de France rider - in fact, I have no doubt about that” said team director Jonathan Vaughters. “It also shows me that cycling is truly cleaning up, not just cosmetically, but to the core. A very young, clean rider able to ride with the best in the world in a high mountain stage would not have been possible a decade ago. Now it is. Whatever problems cycling is going through, to me, this is first hand evidence that the worst is long behind us. I could not be prouder of our team and of the sport for dealing with pain - and overcoming it.”
