April 22, 2007 - Atlanta, GA - On Sunday the Tour de Georgia finished up it’s week-long event with a challenging circuit race in downtown Atlanta - nine laps of a 12 km course.
Knowing that the stage would likely come down to a field sprint, Team Slipstream/Chipotle waited opportunistically for the best possible moment to use their final burst of energy in an effort to contest the win.
There was one small breakaway that lasted a good part of the stage, but as fate would have it, the sprinter-led teams brought the peloton back together as the race entered the final lap.
Team Slipstream/Chipotle’s Timmy Duggan was alert enough during the chaos of the catch to jump into a small group that decided one last time to break away and avoid a sprint finish. Even with good horsepower, and after holding a slight lead for several km, this group was caught with 5 km to go.
The race came down to a field sprint, with Jason Donald coming across in 17th place. There was no change in the final overall race standings so Lucas Euser clinched his fine 9th place overall, along with 3rd in the Best Young Rider competition.
